A Divided Life Made Whole free essay sample

I am a product of two different ideologies: my dad, who very much dislikes the church, and the church itself. Along the way I have experienced the best of both worlds: the wise words of an experienced father, and the spiritual guidance of the church. These two worlds, vastly different, have been linked together into a suit of chainmail that is my life. Not easily broken by the strains of everyday life or the swords used by everyone around me, this chainmail makes me who I am. My father raised me on good morals; he made sure I would not grow up to be a selfish and cruel man, but rather a kind and selfless one. My dad has been there next to me on all my decisions. When I wanted to join baseball as a child, he would try to become a coach for that team. Making sure I did the best I could and that I really had a positive experience from it, he involved himself in my life as much as he could. He pushed me farther than any coach ever has, and in everything I have done too, whether it be a sport, or academics, or just my dedication to certain aspects of my life. For example, when I joined the church he was totally supportive despite the fact that he dislikes it. When I started attending a youth service regularly, he drove me to and from without any complaints. All the while, he kept reminding me I should choose what about religion I believe rather than let it be pushed on me by the church. I am glad my dad told me this, otherwise I probably would have ended up like most â€Å"Christians† I know. They show up at church, and go home unchanged by the message received. When I go home, I apply the message to my life. When I go to school I apply the message. Everywhere I go, I apply the message of God to my life. I love the people around me, and try to show that in my a ctions. If I see someone in need of help I will help, and I often help out where it’s needed. Like everyone else, I do make mistakes. However, with my morals by my father and the message of life by God, I choose the best choice, whichever it may be. The two together protect each other and make me a strong individual, not easily moved by unwanted matters.

Biography of Pink Floyd Essay

Biography of Pink Floyd Essay Free Online Research Papers Music is a large field made of many types each having a character and a color. Through it, the audience is selected and the taste is acquired. Music genre differs and new styles get born. Few pioneers somewhat reached perfection and become a legend in the genre they play, such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd took psychedelic rock to a next level and became icons in their field. They lead flourishing years in the early ’60s and stayed on track despite the various problems they went through. Here is a glimpse of Pink Floyd’s stages from the early ’60s till present time. Before Pink Floyd came to life Roger Waters formed few bands which all ended in a way or another. The recruit of Bob Close and Syd Barret, they changed their name into the Pink Floyd sound. Later that year, bob close left the band. After that, the band recorded their first album â€Å"The Piper at The Gates of Down.† They recorded their first album in the studio where the Beatles were recording, so the band got to know the Beatles very well. During their production to the first album, Syd’s addictions to LSD (better known as acid) lead him to write amazing songs but in the meantime, his performance deteriorated. The band decided to replace Syd with David Gilmour, an old friend of Roger and Syd. During the coming concerts, David was recruited to cover for Syd on stage. If Syd makes a mistake, David would fill the gap and fix it. But the situation was too messed up to be corrected in this way, so the band decided to pick him up; â€Å"he was institutionalized for drug a buse in 1974.† The band continued playing without Syd in 1968 and that was going great in England but not in America. At that time, the band toured with Jimi Hendrix which helped it to increase its popularity. At the end of 1968, the band played a concert in France; they also played a rock opera on stage called â€Å"The Man and The Journey.† At the end of 1969, Pink Floyd released a double album called â€Å"Ummagumma†, the first disk consisted of live tracks and the second consisted of solo studio tracks. In the early ’70s, they released their newer album â€Å"Atom Heart Mother.† Joy Boyd, Pink Floyd’s executive producer, made a compilation album in 1971 of both released and unreleased material from Pink Floyds past and called it â€Å"Relics.† In that time pink Floyd issued their new album â€Å"Meddle† with another peculiar song called â€Å"Echoes† which is 23 minutes long. In 1971, they were asked to do another soundtrack for a movie. After going to Rome to visit one of the two cities destroyed by â€Å" Moun Vesuvius† 2000 years ago, they filmed a private concert and played the best of their material. They issued a video called â€Å"live at Pompeii†, which also included the video recording behind the album of their new work. When Pink Floyd was making â€Å"Obscured by Clouds† they wrote a 45 minutes opus of songs that they played live. This opus was called â€Å"Eclipse† and it concentrated on the society and how it isolates, controls and demolishes life. The initial name for the opus was supposed to be â€Å"Dark Side of the Moon† but the British blues band medicine head released an album the previous year of the same name. So they let the name go until they heard that the medicine album collapsed on Billboard charts, so they refurbished the name â€Å"Dark Side of the Moon† and also wrote an ending song for the opus which was called â€Å"Eclipse.† After that, they twisted their oeuvre into an album in 1973 called â€Å"Dark Side of the Moon.† (It was the second highest selling record in history). To continue the success of the album â€Å"Dark Side of the Moon† Pink Floyd issued the album â€Å"Wish You Were Here.† The album was devoted to original lyricist and guitar player Syd Barret. During that tour, they wrote another opus, but it was mostly instrumental this oeuvre turned to be â€Å"Shine on You Crazy Diamond.† This song was split into two parts because it didn’t fit on the cassette. After the accomplishment of the album â€Å"Wish You Were Here†, the band waited a year and a half before releasing another album. This album was based on the aristocratic and socialist way of life in the world. Each type of person was loosely based on an animal. On July 6th, 1977, the band played their final performance of the tour of the album animals in Montreal, Quebec where one of the fans was screaming relentlessly and accomplishing his way up toward the stage, Roger spit out on him to show misadjustment. Roger felt creepy about this and run away to his hotel room and started writing new music, about how much he and the audience have shattered. At the end of 1978, the band met together to discuss new projects. After David and Rich had made solo albums, Roger Waters made two projects and only one of them was taken, that project was â€Å"The Wall.† This album was released in UK and US and in both places the fans loved it. Between feb26th, 1980 and September 1981, P ink Floyd played the wall in earth’s court in London two times, as if they played in Los Angeles, and four times in Fallen Halle in Dortmund Germany. Rick Wright left the band in 1982 where the band recruited new keyboard players for a new project called spare bricks. Roger had plans for the new album in November 1983 but because of the anxiety between each of the members, Roger dismissed the plans and changed the name of the album to â€Å"The Final Cut† which it probably would be if David and Nick left, but they didn’t. In 1984, the band separated, Rick Wright created a solo project with Dave Harris called â€Å"Zee-identity†, David Gilmour made a new solo album called â€Å"About Face†, and Roger Waters made â€Å"Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking.† In 1986, David Gilmour discussed with Mason about getting the band back together. This caused a major law outfit. Roger Waters prosecuted David and Nick for the rights of the music, and the band n ame itself. Roger didn’t achieve in that because everything was recorded under the name of Pink Floyd. â€Å"A Momentary Lapse of Reason† was an album made by Dave and Nick in 1986. Both Dave and Nick concreted a collection of musicians for the album, like Phil Manzenaral (Guitar), Richard Wright(Keyboard) and the twenty-three others. Pink Floyd started recording in 1993 for their new album â€Å"The Division Bell.† Richard Wright was finally back fully with the band. The band made a tour for six months, where they played twelve shows. Pink Floyd released a live album and video on their division bell tour. The band was successful once more. In 1969, the band was introduced into the Rock and Roll hall celebrity. Mason, Wright, and Gilmore performed â€Å"Wish You Were Here† with Billy Corgan of smashing pumpkins, and after that, the band didn’t make any concert, but Pink Floyd made a live album where they chose different recordings from different live shows with Roger Waters. Roger Waters toured in 1999 and 2000 and made a new live album called â₠¬Å"In the Flesh†. At the end of 2001, the band created a new compilation â€Å"Echoes† with Roger Waters and the producer James Gathery. This album had a great influence on the market. At last, we can’t but appreciate the band’s achievement and their major contribution to the improvement of music standards. Even though the band split at the end with prime disagreement but a reunion was organized in the â€Å"Live 8† in 2005 where they sang as a band. After 24 years of break up, Pink Floyd’s era finished, but they have left marks in the people’s lives. Developing an evaluation plan Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Developing an evaluation plan - Research Paper Example The staff is the most important part of any care setting, so it only makes sense that the staff itself should be surveyed. According to Brown (1992), there must be â€Å"identifie[d] broad categories of determinants of nursing turn-over† (pp. 154). The people who are in the administration should obtain turn-over rates before and after initiating change. This would be helpful in order to analyze whether or not changing policies effectively reduced the rate of turn-over among the nursing staff. †¨Ã¢â‚¬ ¨ Another thing that the administration should do is to compare patient discharge surveys before the change and after the initiation of change. This â€Å"customer service satisfaction† survey would definitely help nurses to increase their level of effectiveness and visibility.†¨Ã¢â‚¬ ¨ Staff attitudes towards the patient are definitely issues that must be addressed. If we are to be serious about the quality of the nursing, we need to know what the staff thinks of the organization they are working for, without having fear of retribution. Perhaps an anonymous questionnaire or survey would be a good indicator that would allow those overseeing the staff to more closely evaluate some of their policies. Patient attitudes and perceptions could definitely help the matrix to be devised which would help reduce the turn-over of the nurses in the organization and improve service to the customers, who in this case would be the patients. Patient attitudes and perceptions are part of what will make the rate of turn-over improve or decline. Thus, it is most important to have the patients’ input. The rate of nursing staff turn-over must be addressed. If there is a problem with retention of the staff, there must be something or someone in the organization that is causing these nurses to leave after a short time. Hopefully, with the analysis of the nursing staff, and with the assistance of questionnaires and surveys, it is then and only then that

Criminal Justice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Criminal Justice - Essay Example Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees â€Å"the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated.† Thus, the process of law requires that search justification would encompass three pre conditions: 1. The warrant for the search should categorically and distinctly mention the premises which need to be searched, as also the principle objective for which the search has been undertaken. 2. It should be based on probable cause backed with reliable information 3. The judicial approval has to be sought before search justifications can be made. However, in the decided case law, Frank V. Maryland 359 US 360 (1959), the Court upheld the conviction of a person who prevented a warranted inspection of private premises. It needs to be stated that administrative searches can only be said to be justifiable if, and when there are sufficient tenable grounds to believe that the objective for which the search has been initiated, could be gained. A total search of an entire city for example, to locate hidden or contraband articles is not justifiable on any count. During periods of emergencies, searches could be conducted with no justifications whatsoever, since it is for public good to protect the citizens from hazardous situations. Therefore, in cases of search and seizing of contaminated and unusable food items by law enforcement agencies, ensuring community vaccinations to guard against outbreak of epidemics etc could serve as instances of searches with justifications. The police form part of the law enforcement agencies whose primary duties lie in the areas of protection of lives and properties of citizens They are fully justified in being given more powers for instituting roadblocks and check points for the following reasons: 1. Finding out criminal or key witnesses in recent criminal activities or deeds. 2. For intercepting vehicles carrying drugs, firearms, or explosives. 3.

Sophies World Philosophical Question

Sophies World Philosophical Question All he knew was that he knew nothing and it troubled him (70). Socrates once proclaimed that he himself had very little knowledge. The statement is ironic and yet it became the foundation for Socrates and, in fact, the philosophers pursuit for wisdom. In truth, Socrates did know something, and that is he knew very little. For him, it was not how a person knows; thats merely knowledge. Instead, wisdom is the realization of how much one still doesnt know; its the realization of the range of ones own ignorance. Socrates interpretation of wisdom is one of the fundamental first steps on the path to philosophical understanding; uncertainty was what made him inquire and contemplate to achieve a fuller understanding of the truth. Human knowledge has rapidly advanced during past centuries and yet there are still questions left unanswered. Over time, a great multitude of people have assumed that they have found meaning and wisdom, but in reality they have simply accepted norms and knowledge handed down to them by society itself. Human wisdom has been dangerously close to stagnation and it would be a tragedy if one would cease to ponder the questions of life due to the perceive notion that the questions of life have been answered. Yes, science has presented the theorems to explain the processes of life and the inanimate, on the other hand theology has illuminated the path with countless parables, and nevertheless they cannot be accepted as the one truth, one must still question beyond the explanations, beyond the parables the true nature of Socratic wisdom lies in the never-ending quest for truth. Socrates himself was troubled that he knew so little (69), and that became the drive to know and understand more not to surrender or blindly submit to other ideas. Socrates questioned many people thought to be wise, and time after time, he discovered the fallacies in their logic, thus exposing their true lack of understanding. Socrates determined that the only reason he was wiser than anyone else was because, unlike all the other wise people he questioned, he didnt lay claim to knowledge he didnt actually possess. He recognized his ignorance while the rest did not; therefore, he assumed the path to wisdom by attaining the process to achieve it not necessarily having all the answers in the world. In retrospect humanity has lost the drive to accept its true lack of knowledge and has failed to rise above the uncertainties and pursue the truth. For centuries science and theology have fulfilled the basic needs of the human curiosity and yet man himself has turned a blind eye to inquire beyond the explanations of theorems, beyond the ancient scrolls of holy books and most importantly beyond ones own curiosity. The sense of satisfaction has been one of mans flaws; mankind has become comfortable in its place in knowledge and has slowed his desire for the truth. Like Socrates shouldnt mankind be troubled for knowing so little and at the same time overlook the pursuit for true wisdom? The beginning of wisdom and true knowledge is to admit ignorance. Humanitys stubborn way of obsessing with knowledge that they thought they fully grasp, has led them into thinking they have mastered every field, when in fact, the most knowledge that someone had acquired was usually only in one thing, not many things, or not any true knowledge about ones place in the world, and of the true meaning of life.

Dialogue and Monologue in the 1798 Lyrical Ballads :: 1798 Lyrical Ballads Bicentennial Essays

Dialogue and Monologue in the 1798 Lyrical Ballads Commemorating the bicentennial of the 1798 Lyrical Ballads implies something about the volume's innovations as well as its continuity. It is no longer possible to believe that 'Romanticism' started here (as I at least was taught in school). Even if we cannot claim 1798 as a hinge in literary history, though, there is something appealing about celebrating the volume's attitude to newness, as well as the less contentious fact of its enduring importance to readers of Romantic-period poetry. What one risks, of course, is the currently ubiquitous accusation that one is repeating the self-representations of an inappropriately authoritative version of Romanticism, as my school-teacher certainly was (though none of us knew it at the time). There is indeed something innately Wordsworthian about the bicentennial, with its celebration of the endurance of a single past event. We recognise this rhetoric of revisitation and futurity: it is the language spoken by the affirming voice of 'Lines writt en above Tintern Abbey', the concluding statement of the 1798 volume. The poem reads rather like the recitation of a liturgy. Wordsworth recollects his own faith by restating it, and in doing so he discovers its truth and its guarantee of continuity: "in this moment there is life and food / For future years" (ll. 65-6). However sceptical readers have become about the Wordsworthian-Coleridgean creed, the monumental quality of the volume is not entirely a figment of a literary history in search of Great Traditions; 'Tintern Abbey' writes its own future—and the future of Lyrical Ballads 1798 as a whole—as well as writing Wordsworth's (and Dorothy's). We may no longer assent to the idea of 1798 as a new beginning, but we still have to accommodate the volume's own assertions about continuity and change. Perhaps the temptation to go on marking the date arises from the presence of these assertions. Even without the extended prefaces of the later editions, the 1798 Lyrical Ballads is a strikingly self-conscious collection. It opens and closes with a pair of manifestos. The 'Advertisement' announces a new poetic practice; 'Tintern Abbey' bears witness to the final achievement of imaginative, moral and domestic security. Together, these two documents act like a set of quotation marks. They frame the stylistic and rhetorical character of the volume as a whole within another kind of voice, instructing, guiding, and (re)assuring. However we choose to take the grand Romantic

Rhetorical Analysis Franklin Delano Roosevelt Essay

â€Å"Yesterday, December 7th, 1941, a date which will live in infamy.† Those are the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Those words will be eternally repeated when discussing the topic of Pearl Harbor. The words contained in this speech show his utter disdain pertaining to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The purpose of President Roosevelt’s â€Å"Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation† was to educate the nation on what had happened on December 7th. He also wanted to justify his reasons for needing to go to war with the Empire of Japan. Each and every word in this distinguished speech played on the emotions of the american people, and it provided significant support for his purpose. The powerful words Roosevelt used in the address gave strong support that grabbed the American peoples’ attention, and. One convincing statement he makes was when he said, â€Å"The United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.† Roosevelt wanted to be sure that the congress and the nation knew the facts behind the tragedy. In that short statement he informs the people that he had no idea that the attack was coming, in his words the attack came suddenly. He also tries to explain Americas relationship with Japan before the attack in this section, â€Å"The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.† That showed the American people what events had taken place prior to the disaster at Pearl Harbor. He wanted the people to know that he was under the impression that the two nations were at peace, and that they were nowhere near a state of war. Another purpose for the address was that Roosevelt wanted to justify going to war with the Empire of Japan. One such section of the speech was when Roosevelt said, â€Å"The distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued  peace†. Roosevelt tried to make his audience feel appalled by the actions of Japan in that excerpt. He wanted to show the audience that Japan was deliberately misleading the American People into having them believe that all they wanted was to make an effort for peace, when at the same time they were preparing for war. In the speech addressing the nation he stated that after the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor they did not stop their. They continued on to attack neighboring countries and city-states. He tried to convince the audience that not only the lives of the American people were at stake but the lives of surrounding countries that may not be able to defend themselves. â€Å"No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory†, through this passage the president wanted to reassure his audience that if they did in fact go to war the end result would be that America will obtain absolute victory. The President not only wanted to educate the American people on the events that occurred, but he also wanted to reassure them if they did in fact go to war, they would come out victorious. Roosevelt’s striking words helped a nation recover from one of the greatest tragedies in the nation’s history. Roosevelt believed that through his words the nation would hold their ground and beat back any enemy that would come their way.
